Sharing Nugget #38

#38: Why war?

I haven’t blog for a long time – being bog down by work... But I saw a documentary that compelled me to share.

It was a CNN feature where their crew went around Iraq interviewing US soldiers. That’s how we get to know this sergeant. Common knowledge of the average US soldier tells us that the sergeant might be 20-25 years of age. Yes, his face gave away glimpse of his youth, but he wore a look of a 40 year old.

I figured that a man who has seen a few months of war in Iraq has seen more than many 40 year olds. He shared with us photos of his family. His dad wore a t-shirt that says “big-daddy”. Sergeant himself looked every part of a boy fresh out from college. He shared about his fears, that everytime he goes out for a mission, he might not come back.

“I have to make my peace with God”, he says.

A few more scenes later, the CNN narrator read these lines, “The last time we saw him was on a rooftop…. Then a few days ago, he was killed by a roadside bomb...”

My goodness.

I was fighting tears.

While the picture of the sergeant lingered on the screen, I though to myself, why are they there in the first place?

WMD? No. Genocide? No. Oil, hegemony and exploitation? YES.

I hope that the democrats are the lesser of two evils.
